Barbara Essl makes photographic works about places where history, architecture and time turn into pictorial space. Her motifs come from abandoned palaces, theatres, industrial sites, harbours and hidden interiors across Europe, places where beauty appears quietly, in the echo of what has passed.

Her photographs are not nostalgic pictures of ruins. They show spaces that have lost their original function and still hold a strong presence. In light, colour, structure and stillness, traces of work, culture, departure and disappearance condense.
